Imphal, August 06 2026: The Department of Physics, GP Women's College, observed Hiroshima Day 2026 today at the Library Hall of the college.

Speaking as the chief guest, Principal Prof L Rajen Singh highlighted the historical significance of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War.

He stated that Hiroshima was bombed with "Little Boy" on August 6, 1945, followed by Nagasaki with "Fat Man" three days later.

Despite "Fat Man" being more powerful, casualties were higher in Hiroshima, he noted.

Prof Rajen Singh said the explosions generated extreme heat and released massive destructive energy, causing widespread devastation and long-term health and environmental impacts.

While acknowledging peaceful uses of nuclear technology, he stressed that its use in war caused catastrophic suffering and urged collective efforts for lasting peace.

HoD Physics L Tamphasana Devi recalled learning about the bombing in childhood and appealed for a nuclear-weapon-free world.

IQAC Coordinator and HoD Geography Prof Md Baharuddin Shah spoke on the importance of spreading awareness on nuclear warfare consequences.

A documentary on Hiroshima Day was screened.

Winners of quiz ' and slogan writing competitions were also felicitated.

Faculty, staff and students attended the programme.
