Imphal, July 06 2024:
Transport director Dr Nivedita Lairenlakpam, on Friday, issued two orders restricting parking of vehicles on the roadsides of national and state highways, as well as vehicle parking for private and commercial establishments within the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) areas.
The first order notified to all concerned that unauthorised occupation and use of public parking on the road sides of National and State Highways is prohibited stating that such acts seriously affect the free flow of traffic and cause road accidents.
The Control of National Highways (Land & Traffic) Act, 2002, empowers highway administrations, including project directors of NHAI, general manager/deputy general managers of NHIDCL, executive engineers of state PWD in charge of National Highways, or any other National Highways officers empowered by the Central government to clear/evict encroachments on the highways with the help of district administration and police.
This decision to issue such an Office Memorandum was reflected in the decision taken by the Traffic Regulation & Parking Committee (TRPC) in its meeting held on June 12 in connection with an application for allotment of public parking on the road side of National Highways in front of the new secretariat building, the order said.
The second order has been directed towards private hospitals and commercial buildings, such as shops and shopping complexes, operating within the areas of the Imphal Municipal Corporation in Imphal West and Imphal East districts.
It mandated necessary vehicle parking space for the vehicles belonging to the patient parties, visitors, and customers shall be made available at their own premises without disturbing public places like roadsides.
