Senapati, June 05 2024:
Commemorating the World Environment Day (WED), Naamai Eco-Tour-ism Society (NETS) in collaboration with Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Directorate of Extension (s), CAU and Maram-headquartered 16 Assam Rifles along with other institutions, NGOs and volunteers planted and adopted tree saplings at Naamai Zho tourism spot here on Wednesday.
The theme of the event was 'Plant and adopt a tree, Imprint your legacy, a global call to green the planet.
Delivering the keynote address, NETS project consultant Ng Ngaorai recounted that as Naamai Zho was bereft of tree, the village authority and youth decided to transform the same into a green space for visitors.
With support of Senapati Forest Division, the said area was turned to a biodiversity park through plantation of cashew and gulmohar trees among other varieties.
However, climatic conditions were not suitable for the trees and all the saplings perished, he pointed out.
Ngaorai continued that members of Poumai Naga Students' Union, Shillong visit the area and planted tree saplings and adopted them last year, which led them to organise a similar programme to nurture the saplings.
He also mentioned that the organisers aim to let someone plant a tree and adopt it by caring for the tree to enhance the survival rate and expressed gratitude to Mount Everest School of Teachers Education, Don Bosco College & Higher Secondary, Eco Club, Sunbird Trust team, Naga Public School students for their active participation in the plantation drive.
Addressing the gathering, Senapati divisional forest officer Shanngam S observed that planting and adoption of saplings should come with responsibilities, as adopting a tree is similar to adopting a child, to take care of, providing the needs and protection from external forces which could affect the growth of the tree.
More than 500 trees were planted, tree guards installed and inscribed with adoptees' names in the signages to nurture the oxygen footprint.
Assam Rifles in collaboration with the Naamai Eco-Tourism Society of Koide village, Seven Sisters Foundation and Lungpikalai Maram Thangal Students also organised a large scale plantation drive at Naamai Zho, Koide and Maram villages on Wednesday.
The plantation drive saw enthusiastic participation of local communities, students and Assam Rifles personnel who planted over 5000 saplings during the event.
The saplings included a mix of indigenous species aimed at restoring the local ecosystem, enhancing biodiversity and contributing to the overall growth of the environment.
