Imphal, June 05 2009: State government's State Skill Development Mission constituted as per direction of the government of India in an effort for the development of skills in different sectors, has approved state planning department as nodal department for skill development related activities.

The decision for the approval of the planning department as nodal agency was taken in a meeting of State Skill Development Mission chaired by state chief minister, O Ibobi Singh recently.

The meeting was convened for identification of action plan for skill development for Manipur, an official source said Friday.

The mission has been constituted as per the direction of the government of India in an effort to develop the skills of the employees in different sectors in response to a DO letter on August 2008 from the Prime Minister which was followed by another DO letter on October of the same year from the Principal Secretary to PM regarding skill development.

The Prime Minister had advised for the constitution of State Level Skill Development Missions.

The Centre has set a target for the creation of 500 million skilled manpower in the country by the year 2022 and also the constitution of three committees or boards to tackle the shortage of skill workers in the country so as to enhance employability.

The National Council on Skill Development with Prime Minister as chairman has been constituted to formulate policy direction.

Constitution of National Skill Development Coordination Board with Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission as chairman and setting up of National Skill Development Corporation as non-profit company.

Chief minister O Ibobi Singh wanted skill development training programmes be arranged in those areas where employment can be ensured both within and outside the state and financial assistance of the state government for skill development link to placement of all those who successfully completed such training programmes.

He suggested that sector specific sub-missions be set up to identify the skill required and the methodology to be adopted for engaging the private sector.

The health and family welfare minister of the state observed that trades suitable for Manipur be found-out and give an overriding importance in the selection of training programmes for the youths of Manipur.

He suggested training in beauty-care, automobile maintenance, food processing etc.

He wanted private parties to be invited for conducting training programmes in the state.
