Imphal, June 04 2024:
Anal Lenruwl Tangpi (ALT), Chakpikarong branch has strongly condemned the June 2 incident at Kakching Lamkhai, where Chakpikarong denizen was harassed by a group of unknown people while returning from Imphal.
According to a statement of ALT, the individual was travelling in his Eeco van after dropping relatives off at the airport.
Upon reaching Kakching Lamkhai, the individual was stopped and questioned about a permit and then falsely accused of supplying essential items to the Kuki community.
Despite fervent plea for release, the individual was detained even as one among the group of people claimed to have made a phone call to Chandel Naga People's Organisation, with one Angam authorising to do as they pleased.
However, it has been confirmed that there is no one by the name of Angam within CNPO, the ALT statement said.
The statement issued by its information & publicity secretary Rt Phetha further said that the group of unknown people even demanded Rs 3,000, which was eventually negotiated down to Rs 1,500, to secure the individual's release.
It was not the first time that residents of Chakpikarong have faced such harassment.
Chakpikarong residents fully understand the need for security check but should be conducted lawfully and respectfully, the statement said, adding that no one going around doing their daily activities should be subjected to baseless accusations or forced to pay money.
While highlighting that Chakpikarong bazar is not the sole shopping hub for the Kukis as towns of Moreh and Churachandpur also serve as major commercial centres for the Kuki community, the ALT statement said that Chakpikarong denizens are peace loving people and should not be unjustly blamed for supplying essentials to any specific community.
It also said that such harassment and extortion disrupt the harmony and safety of communities.
ALT also urged authority concerned to take immediate action against the perpetrators and ensure safety and security of all Chakpikarong residents travelling through Kakching Lamkhai and other areas.
