International Day of Older Persons observed

Imphal, October 01 2026: The Department of Social Welfare, Manipur observed International Day of Older Persons-2026 at City Convention Centre, Konung Lampak, Imphal under the theme "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives" .

Commissioner Haobam Rosita, Director Sheikh Abdul Hakim and All Manipur Senior Citizens' Welfare Confederation secretary general S Sarathkumar Sharma attended as presidium members.

Speaking on the occasion, Rosita said ageing is inevitable and society must care for elders with love.

She said 1.07 lakh elders are covered under Manipur Old Age Pension Scheme, 13,599 under CM's Widow Pension Scheme, 56,045 under IGNOAPS and 7,075 under IGNWPS.

Hakim said campaign to enforce Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 will be intensified, along with free cataract camps and caregiver training.

Meanwhile, Senior Citizens Forum, Imphal East observed the day at Dhannalaya Hall, Brahmapur Nahabam.

Speaker Th Satyabrata Singh said construction of a dedicated office for the Forum is underway and will be handed over soon.

Forum president G Rabichandra, Wangkhei AC MLA Th Arunkumar, Lamlai AC MLA Kh Ibomcha and Kshetrigao AC MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan attended as presidium members.

More than 530 senior members of the Forum were felicitated.
