The College of Food Technology (COFTI), CAU-Imphal, has achieved a major milestone by successfully developing bamboo wine technology under the project "Exploring the Potential of Bamboo Wine: Production, Properties, and Market Viability" .
Led by Dr Ng Taibangnganbi Chanu, Assistant Professor of Microbiology as PI and guided by Prof Ng Iboyaima Singh, Dean of COFTI as Nodal Officer, the project has transformed bamboo shoots and bamboo powder into premium wines.
This innovation opens new opportunities for entrepreneurship, value addition, and sustainable livelihoods across the North East.
On May 20, 2026, the final project report and bamboo wine samples were formally handed over to Kayio Kayina Th, Managing Director, North East Cane & Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC), at Bymihat, Guwahati.
With NECBDC's stewardship, the complete technology package will now be accessible to entrepreneurs, startups, and local communities.
COFTI will continue to drive the transfer of knowledge by offering hands-on demonstrations, training programs, and technical guidance, ensuring smooth transition from laboratory to enterprise.
The achievement underscored COFTI's leadership in food technology innovation, while NECBDC's sustained support has enabled the college to deliver a breakthrough that blends science, sustainability, and regional development.
