Khongjom Tarpan ritual held

Thoubal, September 27 2026: As observed every year, the 33rd Khongjom Tarpan 2026 was held today in honour of the valiant forefathers who laid down their lives during the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 .

The Khongjom Tarpan ritual was held at Diamond radio complex organised by Khongjom War Memorial Trust.

Former Minister Moirangthem Hemanta who is also the president of Khongjom War Memorial Trust led the gathering in paying tributes to the martyrs by making fruits and floral offerings in Khongjom river.

Head of Department of Law, Manipur University, Dr Yumnam Premananda Singh was also present at the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Moirangthem Hemanta recalled the supreme sacrifice made by the martyrs like Paona Brajabashi and other bravehearts by letting down their lives to protect the motherland.

Speaking about the history of Khongjom Tarpan, he said that the Khongjom Tarpan ritual was initiated by former Minister late Moirangthem Ibotombi and Padma Shri awardee Ibetombi of Khonjom Parba fame in 1994 and it is being observed annually till date.

He further stated that Khongjom Tarpan ritual was held in Khongjom War Memorial complex earlier, however the ritual is being held near Khongjom river which flows through Diamond Radio complex at present since the Government denied permission to hold in in the Khongjom War Memorial complex and termed the denial as unfortunate.

He also highlighted the significance of tarpan ritual in Manipuri society as it is an occasion to remember the forefathers and make offerings to them.
