Thoubal, June 20 2024:
A sit-in protest was staged at Khangabok New Market today by the womenfolk of the region demanding a probe in the killing of Thokchom Arun of Khangabok Part 2 Moirangpalli and book the culprits at the earliest.
He was found killed at Sangaiyumpham Part 1 Sabal Leikai in Thoubal district yesterday morning.
A protestor identified as Thokchom Ongbi Asharani urged the Government to probe the killing of Thokchom Arun who left home and was serving as a village defence volunteer since the outbreak of the ethnic crisis.
He came home on June 18 morning by taking a leave of just five days to repair his damaged house affected by the recent hailstorm and to carry out agricultural activities, she said.
Expressing dismay over his killing in a brutal manner, Asharani raised suspicion that the killing must be carried out by some individuals with vested interests, she urged the Government to take up intense measures to investigate the killing and book the culprits to deliver justice to the departed and his bereaved family.
The protestors used placards which read 'We condemn the killing of Thokchom Arun', 'Stop killing innocent people', 'Book the culprits soon', etc and similar slogans were chanted.
Meanwhile, the United Development Committee (UDC) Sangaiyumpham strongly condemned the killing of Thokchom Arun and demanded a probe into the killing.
A press release by the UDC president urged the Government to nab the culprits involved and award befitting punishment at the earliest.
Further UDC pledged to support the activities taken up in connection with the killing by the organisations concerned to ensure justice is delivered.
