Imphal, May 19 2026:
Pathetic conditions of classrooms, severely low attendance of students and lack of necessary infrastructure at NG College has irked Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) .
The rooms of a new block, inaugurated by the President of the country during the recent President's Rule, was found in such a pathetic condition that even horses were found inside the rooms, said DESAM president Oinam Romesh, speaking to media persons after an inspection yesterday.
The inspection was part of DESAM's campaign to improve the State education system.
The student body has carried out similar inspections in the past.
NG College at Uripok has a total of around 1,700 students enrolled.
However, only around 100 students were found attending classes, said Romesh.
Further, the college is found lacking many essential and required infrastructure, he said.
The college has no proper library and librarian.
The number of sanctioned posts of teachers for the college is 41 for 9 departments.
But, the college at present has only 28 teachers for 1,700 students, Romesh said.
Also, the college Principal is found engaging 7 teachers for different subjects, Romesh said, questioning the nature of the engagement.
He asked if the engaged teachers are being paid by the Principal personally or are they being paid using the money generated from students' admission? The lack of infrastructure, shortage of teachers and poor maintenance of the school properties is unfortunate.
It reveals the failure of the Education Department, he said, appealing to the Chief Minister who is also holding the Education portfolio to take immediate corrective measures.
DESAM will continue such inspections at other colleges.
Strict legal actions will be taken against teachers and staff if they are found neglecting their duties, Romesh said.
