Thoubal, January 17 2026: Major Chongtha Mia Memorial Trust and Justice Committee of Anglo Manipuri War 1891 observed the 118th death anniversary of brave Meitei commander Major Chongtha Mia today with floral offerings and tributes at Naran Khamar Meitei village in Tripura.

Major Chongtha Mia was a key leader who led Manipuri soldiers in the Battle of Khongjom in the Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 against the British colonial forces.

He was exiled at Kala Pani in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

After a few years he was released, but forbidden from returning to Manipur.

Thus, he settled at Naran Khamar Meitei village in Tripura till his death in 1908 .

Tributes paid to Major Chongtha Mia on 118th death anniversary

The death anniversary observation at Naran Khamar consisted of Tarpon ceremony along the banks of Sinai River led by Gurumayum Nitai Sharma, president of Major Chongtha Mia Memorial Trust.

This was followed by offering of floral tributes and "Thang-Ta salutes" before the statue of the Meitei freedom fighter at Major Chongtha Mia Complex and at his final resting place.

Addressing the gathering, Justice Committee of Anglo Manipur War 1891 chairman Joychandra Konthoujam presented a brief history about the life of Major Chongtha Mia and the bravery of Manipuri forefathers who fought against the imperialist British empire.

He urged Meiteis in Tripura to showcase their talent and bring laurels for the State in sports and culture, but not to forget their home State of Manipur.

The ceremony was attended by Justice Committee of Anglo Manipur War advisor Luwangcha Chingkhei; Tripura Marup Organization representative N Pranoy; Puthiba Welfare & Cultural Society representative Ksh Dhanajit and Major Chongtha Mia Memorial Trust members Ksh Madhabi, G Gourahari Sharma, Fanjoubam Gourchand, Naorem Brajendra and Langonjam Nilkamal among others.
