Strike today to decry rape, murder

Hospital services are likely to be affected on Saturday (August 17) as the medical fraternity in the state would be joining the 24-hour national medical strike called by Indian Medical Association (IMA) to protest the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata while on duty on August 9.Starting 6am Saturday, the IMA has called for a 24-hour strike of modern medicine doctors but the association, in a circular assured that emergency services will remain operational.
IMA Manipur has endorsed the nationwide medical strike called by the parent body (IMA) .
Teachers' Association JNIMS has also announced its decision to endorse the strike.
According to IMA Manipur vice president Dr Ngangom Arunkumar, all medical services except emergency shall cease for 24 hours from 6am of August 17 .
There will no OPD and elective surgeries during the strike, he said adding that the cease work strike will be joined by teachers and bodies of medical officers of RIMS and JNIMS, Junior Doctors' Association, Medical Students' Network, RIMS and JNIMS resident doctors.
Association of Healthcare Providers of India (AHPI) Manipur will also join the strike, he added.
Meanwhile, RIMS and JNIMS authorities have issued circulars regarding the strike and informed the public that emergency and in-patient care services will continue as usual during the strike period.
Similarly, expressing shock and strong condemnation of the heinous incident at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata in violation of integrity of the individual as well as the institution, Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI)-Manipur Chapter informed that its member hospitals will cease routine OPD, IPD, OT and diagnostic services for 24 hours from 6 am of August 17, but emergency services will remain open.
In a release, AHPI Manipur Chapter denounced that the incident which involved a violent attack on a healthcare professional within the premises of one of the country's most prestigious medical institutions, is both alarming and unacceptable.
Any act of violence against them not only disrupts medical services but also undermines the sanctity of medical institutions and the trust that the public places in healthcare, it continued, while extending full solidarity with the medical fraternity at RG Kar Medical College during this difficult time.
It further urged authorities to take immediate and stringent action against perpetrators of the cowardly act.
It is imperative that those responsible are brought to justice swiftly to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future, it stressed.
