Advanced radiotherapy equipment inaugurated at RIMS

Three state-of-the-art equipment namely "Equinox-100 Teletherapy Unit", "High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy Unit", "Conventional Simulator", and the Manifold & Oxygen Pipeline System were inaugurated at the Department of Radiation Oncology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal on Monday.
Additionally, a hands-on workshop on "Image-based Brachytherapy" was also conducted.
Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, Imphal inaugurated the machines in the presence of Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, and Dr Y Sobita Devi, Head, Radiation Oncology Department, RIMS, Imphal, said a release.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof G Sunil Kumar said that the inauguration of a series of facilities in the Department of Radiation Oncology at RIMS is a significant step towards improving cancer care in the region.
"The completion of the gas pipeline supply system ensures direct access for patients, addressing long-pending needs.
The introduction of state-of-the-art equipment, Equinox 100, HDR Brachytherapy, and Conventional simulator, marks a milestone as the first of its kind in the State", he added.
The Director maintained that efforts are underway to establish a comprehensive radiation oncology facility, including LINAC and CT simulators, with procurement processes expected to be completed within months.
He shared that the plans to upgrade RIMS to a tertiary care center with a 150-bed cancer hospital will serve not only Manipur but also neighboring States and countries.
"Addressing challenges, the need for trained human resources remains critical, with calls for in-house training programs for medical and surgical oncologists.
Infrastructure improvements, such as lifts and ramps, are prioritized to enhance patient accessibility", he added.
He also highlighted that recruitment efforts have been streamlined under a centralized process by AIIMS Delhi, and outsourcing is being utilized to address immediate staffing needs.
Furthermore, Prof G Sunil Kumar said that the department's progress highlighted RIMS's commitment to becoming a leading cancer treatment hub in Northeast India, equipped with advanced technology and skilled professionals.
The inaugural event was attended by Deputy Director (Admn), RIMS, Imphal, Principal, College of Nursing, HODs, faculty members, nursing officials, staff and students of RIMS, Imphal.
