Empowering women through legal literacy: MSCW-MBC hold awareness programme

A one-day legal awareness programme on women's rights was jointly organised by the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) and the Women Department of Manipur Baptist Convention (MBC) on Tuesday at MBC Training Hall, Imphal.
The programme aimed to enhance legal literacy among women and equip them with knowledge of rights and remedies available under the law.
Delivering the keynote address, W Phajatombi Devi, Member Secretary, MSCW and Additional Director, IPR, Manipur, said the session was part of a two-day seminar being organised by MBC.
She stressed that legal awareness is key to empowering women in today's society.
"Active participation gives meaning to such programmes.
Women need to know the legal provisions and remedies available to them", she said, adding that resource persons would explain how legal support can be accessed and utilised effectively.
She further urged the women secretaries attending the programme to share the knowledge gained with other women in their associations and communities to spread legal awareness at the grassroots level.
Th Tiningpham Monsang, Chairperson, MSCW, said the Commission, set up in 2006, has handled many cases where women lacked awareness of their rights.
She noted that MSCW regularly organises such programmes to educate women and help them seek remedies when their rights are violated.
She also highlighted the role of women in bringing positive social change and called on participants to disseminate the information in their communities.
The inaugural session and blessing prayer was led by Rev Dr Jolly Rimai, general secretary, MBC.
The technical session on "Empowering Women Through Legal Literacy - Rights of Women" was conducted by Kh Lucy Jacky, Deputy Chief, Legal Aid Defence Counsel, Chandel.
The welcome address was delivered by Archana Serto, women secretary, MBC.
Sk Sophia, Member, MSCW and women secretaries from various church associations also attended the programme.
