A large number of students, doctors, nurses, survivors and volunteers participated in a Walkathon in Imphal on Saturday to raise awareness about Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination and cervical cancer.
The Cervical Cancer Awareness Walkathon, was organised by the Karkinos Healthcare Northeast Pvt Ltd under the theme, ""Early Detection Saves Lives".
The walkathon began from the Western Gate of the historic Kangla Fort and passed through Sanjenthong, Konung Mamang and New Checkon, culminating at Karkinos Healthcare in Porompat.
Speaking to the media, Karkinos Healthcare's Medical Superintendent Dr Y Indebor said that the walkathon was conducted to spread awareness about the need of vaccination for cervical cancer and what steps should be taken to decrease the incidents of cervical cancer amongst adolescent girls and young women.
He asserted that cervical cancer is a significant health concern, and there is an alarming rise in both breast and cervical cancer cases in India and specifically within the Northeast region, including Manipur.
Dr Indebor emphasized that public awareness and proactive health measures, including vaccination and regular check-ups, are the only way to turn the tide against cervical cancer.
