Ukhrul, June 09 2026:
The Development for Hills (DFH) has urged the Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur, to immediately extend the application deadline for the Manipur Old Age Pension Scheme (MOAPS), alleging that the current timeline is inadequate and unfair to elderly residents living in rural and hill areas.
In a representation submitted to the Director of the Social Welfare Department on June 9, DFH expressed strong dissatisfaction over the manner in which the MOAPS application process was announced through a press release issued on May 30.According to DFH, although the notification was dated May 30, the public was informed only on June 1, leaving eligible applicants with just nine days to complete and submit their applications before the June 10 deadline.
DFH pointed out that prevailing conflict situation in the State has severely affected transportation and accessibility, making it difficult and in some areas, unsafe for elderly villages to travel to District Social Welfare Offices for necessary formalities.
The organisation also highlighted challenges arising from the online documentation process, stating that applicants are required to obtain Tribe/Caste and Income Certificates online despite limited internet connectivity, lack of digital literacy and absence of support facilities in many villages.
Further, DFH alleged that the timeline was discriminatory, noting that beneficiaries of certain disability-related welfare schemes are generally given much longer notice periods before application deadlines.
Maintaining that the current schedule could prevent many deserving senior citizens from availing themselves of the scheme, DFH demanded an immediate extension of the deadline by at least 30 days.
