Importance of traditional knowledge systems stressed

A two-day National Seminar on "Traditional Knowledge System & Cultural Resilience: Exploring Traditional Wisdom for Sustainable Development" was inaugurated at the Manipur University today.
The seminar is being organised by the Department of Library and Information Science, Manipur University, in collaboration with Manipur University Library, and sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) .
MU VC in-charge Prof RK Hemakumar Singh, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science Prof Ch Ibohal Singh, Dean of School of Education Prof Premlata Maisnam.
Head of Department of Library and Information Science Prof Shashank Sawane attended the event.
Inaugurating the seminar, Prof RK Hemakumar Singh emphasised the contemporary relevance of traditional knowledge systems in the context of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.He expressed hope that discussions among experts, faculty members and students would produce meaningful outcomes for the University and the wider community.
Prof Shashank Sawane described traditional knowledge as the accumulated wisdom of generations, developed through observation, experimentation, adaptation and community experience.
Referring particularly to Manipur and the wider Northeast, he described the region as a living repository of ecological diversity, cultural plurality and indigenous knowledge systems that deserve greater academic recognition and systematic documentation.
He further observed that traditional knowledge represents the intellectual and cultural wealth of communities, accumulated over generations, which may be difficult to recover once lost.
A total of 25 participants took part in the seminar.
