Imphal, July 08 2026:
Weavers in Manipur have welcomed the appointment of a new Director of the Directorate of Handloom and Textiles, while urging the new officer to prioritize the welfare and development of the weaving community.
Speaking at a press meet at Manipur Press Club attended by representatives of various Weavers Cooperative Societies, W Maipak, secretary of Thoubal Pakhangkhong Leirak Weavers Cooperative Society, said the change of Director is a Government policy and there is no question of whether outgoing Director E Jiten was good or bad.
"Our expectation is that the new Director will take up initiatives for the progress of weavers.
Officials should welcome weavers warmly when they visit the department.
The practice of making it difficult to meet the Director by engaging a Private Secretary should be stopped", Maipak said.
He also urged the Government to ensure that beneficiaries receive full benefits of schemes meant for weavers.
Another weaver, Uritkhinbam Bala, highlighted that goods worth over Rs 8 lakh from four stalls were lost during the 2025 State Handloom Expo at GM Hall, Imphal.
She said authorities had assured compensation but it has not been paid till date, and appealed for early release of the amount.
