CM talks tough, Rs 5 lakh for slain policeman

Imphal, October 02 2014 : The State Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the police personnel, who died in a powerful IED blast, triggered near a Durga Puja Pandal at MG Avenue last night.

A compensation of Rs 50,000 each has also been announced for the persons who suffered serious injury and Rs 20,000 each to those who sustained minor injury.

These were announced by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi while visiting the injured persons at RIMS and Shija Hospitals today.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Deputy Chief Gaikhangam and high ranking police officers.

Responding to a query on whether the State Government has established any clue on the culprits of the blast, Okram Ibobi said that police are investigating the incident and the culprits would come to light soon.

Strongly condemning the incident, the Chief Minister assured that the State Government would leave no stone unturned in tracing the culprits.

Okram Ibobi said that attacking people, who were performing ritual ceremonies and celebrating a festival, are condemnable in the strongest term.

Every section of the society should condemn the act, he added.

Maintaining that not even a single problem can be solved by killing each other, the Chief Minister said that those groups, who are indulging in violent activities, must speak out openly what they think and what they want instead of targeting innocent people.

He also assured to take up stringent measures to avert such incidents in future.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also holds the Home portfolio said that the State Government has been taking up various measures to prevent such violent incidents from time to time.

Saying that a security review meeting was recently held with the State DGP in the chair, Gaikhangam said that it is hard for security per sonnel to frisk every single person in crowded areas.

Saying that he would di rect the officials concerned to fix the problems of the malfunctioning CCTV cameras, installed at different comers of Imphal, Gaikhangam said that culprits can be easily detected if all the CCTV cameras are functioning well.

Meanwhile, the deceased policeman M Ibotomba (34) s/o (L) Irabot of Lilong Arapti, who died in yesterday's blast, was given full State honour in a ceremony held at 1st Manipur Rifles ground.

Ibotomba's lifeless body was brought to the ground at around 11,30am today after post mortem examination at RIMS morgue.

Later, a team of 1st Manipur Rifles offered a gun salute to the departed soul.
