International Day of Older Persons 2024 observed

Kamjong/Senapati/Ukhrul, October 01 2024:
As observed annually on October 1 across the globe, International Day of Older Persons 2024 was celebrated today at Kamjong, Senapati and Ukhrul under the theme "Ageing With Dignity" .
At Kamjong, the day was observed at Nambashi Horton Village along Kasom Khullen Road.
The event was jointly organised by the District Social Welfare Office, Kamjong and Rural People Development Organization, Heirok Part-II.
Speaking as the chief guest, HL Jain, ADM, Kamjong stated that older people are a vital part of society and they are sources of knowledge and experience.
During the observation, gifts were presented to senior citizens to mark the occasion.
Angom Tamphasana, District Social Welfare Officer, Kamjong and Joshua Marchang, Headman of Nambashi Horton Village attended the function as president and guest of honour respectively.
Additionally, secretaries and office bearers of Rural People Development Organization (RPDO) and Senior Citizen Home, Nambashi Horton Village were also present at the function.
Meanwhile, the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) in collaboration with District Administration, Senapati, District Social Welfare Office, Senapati and 7 Sisters Foundation jointly observed the International Day of Older Persons today at Multipurpose Hall, opposite DC Office Complex, Senapati under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.
On the occasion, aids and assisted living devices were distributed to senior citizens by ALIMCO.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner of Senapati, Mamoni Doley, IAS mentioned that the Union Cabinet has recently approved health coverage for senior citizens aged 70 years and above irrespective of their income with the benefits of upto five lakhs for free health insurance covers on family basis along with issuance of PMJAY card.
She urged the Social Welfare Department to take comprehensive surveys and make efforts to include more senior citizens in the beneficiaries list.
She also mentioned that permission for setting up of senior citizens offices in the office campus has been granted.
Delivering the welcome note, District Social Welfare Officer, Senapati Khullak Tungran Dangsawa briefed the gathering on the importance of observing International Day for Older Persons.
As part of the programme, Senapati DC distributed wheelchairs, walking sticks, hearing aids, knee braces and various other assisted living devices to senior citizens.
The programme was attended by ALIMCO officials, DWSO staff and Senapati Senior Citizen and its members.
Lastly, the District Social Welfare Ukhrul, Medical Department Ukhrul, Tangkhul Kharar Long, Ukhrul District Pharmacy Association and Service for Elders jointly organised the International Day of Older Persons at DRDA Conference Hall, Mini Secretariat Office Complex at Hamleikhong in Ukhrul.
On the occasion, some elderly persons showcased a Tingteila (traditional instrument) performance and folk songs during the celebration.
The District Medical Department also organised a health camp at the venue.
Meanwhile, Ukhrul District Pharmacy Association and District Hospital provided free medicine to more than 130 elderly persons.
Wungpam Kasar, secretary of Tangkhul Kharar Long expressed gratitude to all partner organizations.
