Fear of de-recognising RIMS MBBS course allayed

After Medical Council of India (MCI) prepared an unfavorable report following an inspection of the academic and physical facilities of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) by a team of the council on September 5 and 6 last year, RIMS authority is all set to prove that there had been some errors in the preparation of the report and also seek review of the same.
The report was tabled during an Executive Committee meeting of MCI on January 13 last wherein inadequate academic and physical facilities of the medical institute were highlighted.
Following the report, MBBS students of the institute were apprehensive about de-recognizing their institute.
Coming to their rescue, RIMS authority is prepared to apprise the students that there is nothing to worry.
Sources told this daily that RIMS authority held threadbare discussion on the matter so as to provide concrete evidences to MCI regarding the errors committed in the preparation of the report.
According to the report tabled in the Executive Committee meeting of MCI, there is lack of required infrastructure and facilities in the medical institute.
It mentioned that the institute is short of lecture theatre, e-class facilities and space for library.
The report also mentioned that seat capacity of the Common Room for both boys and girls of the institute is limited to only 15-20 while there was absence of attached toilets.
The absence of Audiometric & Speech Therapy, well-equipped ICU and Obstetrics departments are some of the points reportedly highlighted in the report, the sources informed.
Furthermore, it also mentioned that the medical institute availed only five X-Ray machines against the required six.
After the adverse report by the MCI, RIMS authority is all set to send a report containing photos and videos of the actual position to MCI soon to contradict the points mentioned in the inspection report.
The authority will be apprising MCI that there had also been tabulation error in claiming the needs of resident doctors.
RIMS authority will now prove that ICU, ICCU, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in the institute have been functioning effectively.
The authority will also be requesting MCI to inspect the institute again so as to review its claims.
The RIMS authority will be showing the council that the institute has got a Lecture Hall with 274-seat capacity and four Lecture Halls, each having 120-seat capacity apart from availing e-class facilities.
The sources maintained that repairing works were going on in the Lecture Halls of the institute when the team of MCI came to inspect.
Referring to the point highlighted in the report prepared by the council that the institute did not have Pediatric Intensive Care Unit facility; the RIMS authority will be claiming that there is a Well Baby Clinic in the Pediatric Department which functions like Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
There is also a section of Audiometric & Speech Therapy in ENT Department of the institute apart from providing Speech & Therapy course.
The claim made by the council's report that there are only five X-Ray machines against the required six in the institute is wrong as there are six machines which have been functioning effectively, the sources explained.
The RIMS authority will be providing video footages to MCI to substantiate that the institute has got its Common Room with 70-100 seat capacity against the report that the room has the capacity of only 15-20 seats.
The Executive Committee of MCI had asked authority of RIMS to work on the lapses mentioned in the council's report within three months.
Accordingly, the institute authority will be sending a report containing photos and video footages to the council to appraise the present condition of the institute.
