Consultation on 'Draft Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Policy' held

Imphal, August 31 2026: The National Commission for Women, in collaboration with the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), organised a one-day consultation programme on the "Draft Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Policy, 2026" today at Siroy Hall, Hotel Imphal.

MSCW Chairperson Th Tiningpham Monsang, Member Sk Sophia and Member Secretary and Additional Director, DIPR, W Phajatombi Devi attended the inaugural session as presidium members.

Addressing the inaugural session, Th Tiningpham Monsang emphasised the need to examine existing laws and provisions concerning women and identify areas requiring amendments, improvements and strengthening.

She said in the absence of specific provisions, it is important to formulate appropriate policies to protect and empower women, who constitute nearly half of the State's population.

She highlighted the importance of dedicated budgetary provisions for women, stating that adequate allocation and effective utilisation of resources can help address various challenges faced by them.

She stressed the need for comprehensive and effective policies for gender equality and women's empowerment in Manipur.

Delivering the keynote address, W Phajatombi Devi highlighted the need to identify existing provisions and examine scope for necessary amendments.

She stated that the State presently lacks a separate and comprehensive law specifically addressing women's issues and emphasised the need to examine the matter in accordance with the realities and requirements of women in Manipur.

She said MSCW would explore the possibility of seeking guidance and support from NCW and stressed the importance of consultations with stakeholders including NGOs, private institutions and organisations working for women's welfare.

Retired IAS officer RK Nirnai Singh moderated the programme.

The technical session witnessed participation from officials of various Government departments, intellectuals and resource persons who shared their views and suggestions on the draft policy.
