Imphal, May 27: Along with takinghanding over charges to the newly elected president and councillors of Manipur University Students' Union, 2008-09, an action plan of the student's body to be implemented during its term was announced today.

Addressing a press conference in this connection at the Students' Home of the University today, newly elected MUSU president Kshetrimayum Narayan observed that although building construction work has been taken up after its conversion of Manipur University as a Central University, the most important aspects of running a University smoothly have not yet been taken care of.

Among others, there is lack of communication between the administrative block of the University and its three schools, namely School of Science, School of Social Science and School of Humanities, Narayan pointed out, while maintaining that lack of communication between the A-Block and the students has caused serious setback in taking up developmental activities of the University.

So in accordance to its action plan, MUSU would work towards ensuring infrastructural developments pertaining to Health Care, Hostel, Guest House, Library, Students' Home, Transports, the three schools, administrative block, departmental infrastructures and Manipur University Research Club during the term 2008-09, Narayan pledged.

With reference to the A-block, some of the points highlighted in the action plan include ensuring grant of UGC-sponsored fellowships to M Phil and Ph D scholars in time, to provide grant-in-aid to physically handicap students and timely circulation of notice related to seminars and conference and increment in percentage of students and amount of freeships and grant-in-aids to meritorious PG students.

In connection with the existing health centre, the action plan pointed out that the centre is yet to have its own ambulance, adequate equipments and professional paramedics, thus causing lot of difficulties in case of emergency.

In the absence of an ambulance, private vehicles have to be hired for taking the patient to the hospital.

Narayan informed that MUSU would also be putting pressure on the authority concerned for providing facilities for OPD, Ortho, dermatology, ENT, Eye and Gynaecology in the health centre.

On infrastructural requirements in the library of the University, MUSU president spelled out that journals and books including e-catalog (OPAC) access and computer systems would be made available to the students and recommendations from teachers and research scholars would be sought at the time of purchasing books for the library.

Organising book fair of international standard, establishment of publication and documentation units and ensuring completion of the construction work on the second and the third floor of the library are other areas that MUSU would pay attention to, Narayan informed.

On departmental infrastructures, the student leader mentioned that MUSU would work for ensuring proper functioning of the University water supply station and round the clock supply to all the blocks, setting up common room for research scholars within the Departments concerned along with providing necessary reading materials.

Facilitating foreign exchange programmes, international and National seminars & conference, student placement through incubation programmes and encouragement of campus recruitment by external agencies and increasing of the existing bus routes from the present 4 to 10 circulating in 30 kms radius, providing balance diet to the hostellers, etc are among other points highlighted in the action plan. During the course of the press conference, the student body also strongly condemned the May 14 incident in which security personnel opened fire and caused grievous injuries to a student inside the University campus.

Demanding that the State Government should provide all the medical expenditure for treatment of the victim identified as Thokchom Ranjit, the student body has warned of launching various agitations in case the Government fails to do so.

After the press conference, the newly elected representatives of MUSU went along with media-persons to inspect the progress of the library building which is being constructed as well as the existing infrastructural requirements in the library.
