Imphal, August 26 2022: Yengkhom Biswajit (42), a resident of Ningombam Awang Leikai who studied only till Class X standard is making a handsome profit from pig farming though he had to shift home due to the expansion of Imphal Airport.

Not only is Biswajit providing for his family, but he also has procured two pieces of land measuring two sangams out of the income he earned from rearing pigs since 1997 .

Biswajit, son of Late Y Biren and Bhanu has two siblings - one brother and a sister.

His land measuring point 23 acre at Ningombam Awang Leikai was acquired by the Government for the upgradation of Imphal International Airport and in its place, the Government gave him a land measuring point 15 acre at Haribokching in Langthabal.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, Biswajit said that he started his pig farming business with just three sows (female swine) when he was in Class X standard.

Saying that he now has 10 pigs and 30 piglets, Biswajit continued that he has been selling piglets to other farmers.

Continuing that he started rearing pigs to assist his mother in running their family, he added that rearing pigs is now his full time profession and is working to expand his business.

Biswajit stated that pig farming is a lucrative business.

Saying that a female pig starts breeding on reaching one year, he added that a mother pig usually breeds twice a year (every six months) .

He also stated that a healthy pig can have 7 to 12 piglets in every birth and added that he markets a single piglet at around Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 .

Continuing that he rears both hampshire and other breeds of pig at his farm, Biswajit informed that the price of an adult hampshire pig is around Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 while the local breed is being marketed at around Rs 30,000 to 40,000 .

Biswajit further maintained that he hasn't encountered any difficulties or problems in his business since 1997 as the pigs are vaccinated regularly and given only healthy feeds.

Biswajit continued that the place where pigs are reared should be cleaned regularly.

Saying that he also arranged a seperate room to keep the piglets as they need a certain amount of heat to survive, he added that his wife takes the responsibility of keeping the sty clean.

Mother of Biswajit, Yengkhom (O) Bhanu said they gave Rs 3 lakh to a particular person so that his son could get a Government job.

Saying that his son, however, was not shortlisted for the job, Bhanu added that his son, fortunately, is running the pig rearing business successfully through the grace of God.

Bhanu further stated that she is happy to see the growth of his son's business.
