Imphal, August 25 2025:
The heavy toll of conflict and displacement has claimed yet another life as an IDP died by suicide last night at Sajiwa Relief Camp.
The deceased has been identified as Konsam Bomet (46), s/o Konsam Budhi whose home at Sadu Yengkhuman in Imphal East was set ablaze by Kukis on May 3, 2023.He was found hanging from a tree roughly 200 metres from his room.
Bomet is survived by his wife, 10 year old son and 15 year old daughter.
One of his children is physically challenged.
Speaking in this connection, an IDP by the name of S Ibomcha from Dolaithabi shared that Konsam Bomet, an inmate of Sajiwa Prefabricated House Relief Camp D1 Room No 1, was a farmer back home at Sadu Yengkhuman.
With the eruption of violence, he took shelter at the relief camp in Sajiwa along with his family including his parents.
They stayed in a tiny room measuring only 8 feet.
Bomet grabbed any work he could get to provide for his family, but work was hard to come by and the daily allowance of Rs 80 given by the Government was not enough to meet their needs and burdened him with financial stress.
Helpless in the face of such challenges, he was mentally distressed and also consulted doctors seeking medical treatment.
According to Ibomcha, the recent surge in temperature had affected Bomet's appetite and he was unable to eat properly for roughly 3 days.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Ibomcha said that they found Bomet hanging from an Indian Jujube tree (Boroi) around 8 pm yesterday after going missing from 6.30 pm.
In the backdrop of such a tragic loss, Ibomcha has urged the Government to assess the condition of relief camps and acknowledge the plight of IDPs in the State.
If displaced folks continue to languish in relief camps in such pathetic conditions without any means to return home, many more will develop mental disorders and the death toll will surely rise, he cautioned.
After undergoing postmortem examination at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Bomet's body was handed over to his family members for performing last rites on Monday.
