Imphal, March 25 2010: A team of Medical Council of India (MCI) led by a head inspector today started inspection of the infrastructure being developed at the proposed Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) at Porompat in Imphal East district.

The state government is at present engaged in hectic efforts to be ready for commencing the first academic session of the Institute from July this year.

The three-member MCI team led by head inspector, Dr Suresh Shah, who arrived in Imphal yesterday, got down to the inspection works from 8 am today.

Other members are QM Rahaman and Miss M Dutta.

The inspection will go on till tomorrow, and the team will leave Imphal on March 27 .

Reliable sources said that the team, apart from inspecting the infrastructure being developed for JNIMS, will collect all the required reports regarding the position of faculties and equipments installed till now for the proposed institute, and place their report and assessment before the higher authority of the MCI, who will decide on the state government's proposal for commencement of the session from July this year.

Curious reporters who went to the JNIMS complex to cover the inspection mission of the MCI team were barred from taking photographs and querrying the team by putting up a notice saying "No photographs, No questions" at the main entrance of the complex.

The state government had proposed commencement of academic session at the Institute on two earlier occasions.

But the MCI team, after inspecting the infrastructure, refused to issue clearance certificate.

Meanwhile, the Newmai News Network has reported that some of the staffs of JNIMS had expressed doubt on commencement of classes in the institute this year.

However, the report said that during the visit of Chief Minister O Ibobi to JNIMS on March 20, Dr Yaima, Director, Health Services, had stated that the target of the state government was to commence the classes of JNIMS by July this year.

The Chief Minister had assured that the required materials for the construction of the institute would be provided by the state government.

The report quoting hospital sources said that they were confident that the classes would begin this year.

Construction of Out Patient Department (OPD) of JNIMS is about to be completed.

Faculty members are already adequate, they said.
