Imphal, December 24 2014 :
Alleging that PWD has misappropriated a huge amount of fund without undertaking any road repairing works, people of Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai blocked Mayai Lambi today.
According to information culled from the State, a large number of people belonging to Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai came out on the highway at about 2.30 pm and blocked the highway by burning tyres and laying timber and bamboo across the road.
Haobam Marak Social Union Club general secretary Suraj said that a huge amount fund was sanctioned by the Government of India under SPA in 2011-2012 for repairing six roads located within Keishamthong Assembly segment.
Of the six roads, one passes around Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai.
However, without undertaking any piece of repairing work, Rs 46 lakh was withdrawn on March 26 last year followed by another Rs 46 lakh on March 19 this year.
However, official documents claimed that the repairing works have been completed and this resulted in a public uproar, Suraj said.
On the other hand, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar stated on Monday on the floor of the House that there was no question of fund misappropriation with regard to repairing the six roads.
Suraj said that intense modes of agitation would be launched if the road of Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai is not repaired within the current year.
He also demanded that befitting actions should be initiated against the PWD engineers, officials and the contractors involved in swindling the public money.
The five other roads listed for repairing are Pishum Ningom Leirak, Keishamthong Top Leirak, Keishampat Jailor Leirak, Manisana Leirak and Leimajam Leikai road.
