Imphal, June 23 2025:
A recent landslide in Nagaland's Phesama has crippled road connectivity along National Highway-2 which is the lifeline of Manipur, however, President's Rule Government in Manipur seems not bothered by it, Manipur Drivers Association (MDA) has alleged.
However, President's Rule regime in Manipur has not said a word to the Nagaland Government on the landslide in Phesama along Imphal-Dimapur Highway, alleged MDA general secretary, Sanjoy Kshetrimayum at the association's office at Kwakeithel today.
Due to the landslide in Phesama, vehicular movement has been suspended.
Despite effort to reconstruct and repair the road, continuous rainfall has further deteriorated the condition of the already damaged road.
Judging by the pace of work at present, it may take the entire rainy season to complete the reconstruction, Sanjoy said.
He emphasised that the Manipur Government should talk to the Nagaland Government and relevant authorities for speedy repair of the road.
Even as the main Highway has been crippled, Sanjoy said many truckers and trade organisations in the region including the MDA, under the North East Federation of Trade Union, have been taking up great efforts to bring in essential commodities through a bypass road from Kidima to Tadubi.
However, the condition of this bypass road has deteriorated with some trucks carrying beyond the standard and permissible load, Sanjoy said.
The Kidima to Tadubi stretch is the only bypass road available for bringing in essential commodities until the connectivity in Phesama is restored.
Therefore, the Government's authorities concerned should strictly monitor the load of each vehicle plying the bypass road, he said.
The authorities concerned should restrict trucks from carrying a load beyond 12 tonnes, he added.
Meanwhile, taking advantage of the nearly a month of interruption in connectivity, traders and shops in Manipur have reportedly hiked the prices of essential commodities.
The Department of Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution and relevant authorities should look into this and monitor the prices of the essential commodities, Sanjoy said.
Further, the Chief Secretary and the head of the State should put pressure on the relevant authorities to repair the Highway and restore vehicular movement at the earliest, he reiterated.
