Imphal, February 20 2025:
Andro AC MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar Singh has asserted that he will resign from his position as a legislator if the imposition of President's Rule is going to be a long term arrangement.
His announcement comes at a time when Manipur has been facing a political crisis after the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Speaking to the media after meeting BJP State unit president A Sharda Devi along with other party MLAs at Nityaipat Chuthek today, Shyam-kumar continued they have urged the BJP chief to convene a meeting of all party MLAs to build consensus on accepting the Central leadership's choice for the next Chief Minister.
Saying that BJP alone has 32 MLAs in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, he added that there is a need to reinstate the BJP led Government in the State.
The interest of BJP Kuki MLAs is another thing, he added.
Reiterating that he will resign if he senses the State Assembly is going to be dissolved, Shyamkumar maintained that he has made his stand clear to the BJP president.
On being asked whether any MLA has been projected to be the next Chief Minister, the MLA responded that he personally has no idea about the matter.
He, however, said that all BJP MLAs, including himself, will accept whoever the Central leadership chooses as the next Chief Minister.
BJP still has the numbers to form the Government, Shyamkumar said and emphasized that it would be undesirable if the party, despite being in the majority, fails to form the Government.
Thanga AC MLA Tongbram Robindro, meanwhile, said that all the BJP MLAs are against the imposition of PR in the State.
He also said that they have urged Sharda Devi to convey the stand of the party MLAs to the Central leadership and reinstate the Government.
Saying that a meeting of the BJP MLAs may take place in the next three or four days, Robindro dismissed the claims that BJP is divided into two groups, calling the notion unfounded.
There is no question of discord among the BJP MLAs, the MLA said.
Saying that PR may have been imposed on account of the law and order situation in the State, he exuded confidence that the BJP Government will return to Manipur.
The Centre will never dissolve the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, he said.
To a media query, Robindro said that the statement given by Shyamkumar on resigning is the stand of all the party MLAs.
Claiming that people are against the imposition of PR, he added that MLAs automatically will lose their seats if the Assembly is dissolved.
The law and order situation in Manipur has been improving so the Centre won't keep the State under PR for a prolonged period, he said.
