Blacktopped in March but now...NH-2 filled with crater-sized potholes

Imphal, May 19 2026: Broken and filled with crater-sized potholes, the Senapati to Mao stretch of National Highway-2 has become a nightmare for commuters.

The stretch from Senapati to Mao was blacktopped in March recently.

But, it is now broken in many places and filled with large potholes, said B Loli, president of the Senapati District Drivers Welfare Union, speaking to this paper.

The National Highway-2, Imphal-Dimapur Road, is not only a lifeline for the people of Manipur but also part of the strategic Asian Highway which connects Manipur and India to other Southeast Asian countries, Loli said.

All sorts of essential commodities and goods including food, grain and medicines are brought into Manipur via the highway, Loli said.

While the road is vital to Manipur, it has been neglected and ignored, causing hardships to commuters including truckers who bring in essential goods, Loli added.

"We have repeatedly approached and appealed to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to repair the road.

We have submitted photographic evidence showing the broken road and potholes, and their officials have even inspected the road.

But, so far no action has been taken up to repair the road," Loli said.

While the NHIDCL has cited the sub-contractor's inability to come to the site due to the present crisis in Manipur, Loli said, the condition of the road has deteriorated further after recent spells of rainfall.

There have been instances of vehicles getting stuck in the potholes, Loli added.

"The road was blacktopped in March recently.

Its present condition only a month after reflects the inferior quality of the work executed," Loli said, urging the NHIDCL and authorities concerned of the Government to repair the road at the earliest.
