Not let up in DESAM protest; effigies burnt

Sustaining their protests against the Government's process to recruit pre-primary teachers, DESAM volunteers burnt effigies of Education Minister Th Basantakumar, Education Commissioner H Gyanprakash and Education (S) Director L Nandakumar at Pangei Bazar, Imphal East and in front of Oriental College, Imphal West.
DESAM Imphal East District Council secretary general S Pamheiba decried that the Government has been rewarding wrongdoers while putting those who pointed out the wrongdoings behind bars.
If the Government is determined to recruit untrained teachers, it may take a decision whereby students would be allowed to become doctors and engineers as soon as they complete Class XII, Pamheiba said.

He also demanded resignation of the alleged irresponsible Education Minister, Education Commissioner and the Education (S) Director.
He further demanded unconditional release of the three DESAM members who were arrested by police for protesting against the alleged faulty recruitment process.
Notably, a large number of DESAM volunteers protested against the Govern- ment's process of recruiting pre-primary teachers and stormed the office of SSA at Babupara as well as Directorate of Education(S), Lamphelpat on June 13 .
DESAM assistant secretary general Sorokhaibam Rokiyo (20) s/o Manikhomba of Pukhao Leitanpokpi, anti-drug campaign secretary Pilot Khangembam (23) s/o Yaima of Bishnupur Thiyam Leikai Ward No 8 and finance secretary Oinam Surjakanta (29) s/o Selungba of Thoubal Athokpam were arrested by Lamphel police station for the protest.
On June 14, they were produced before a Duty Magistrate and the Magistrate remanded them to judicial custody but they were arrested again by Imphal police station in connection with another similar case.
