Imphal, April 15 2025:
The Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has launched a crackdown on single use plastic as announced starting today.
Today, a joint team of Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Imphal Municipal Council and MPCB carried out the drive at Alu Galli at Thangel Keithel and seized carry bags thicker than 120 microns, single use plastic and other non biodegradable bags.
This, however, isn't the first crackdown on single-use plastic, but previous attempts haven't yielded positive results.
Shopkeepers who were found selling the banned plastic items were also fined Rs 2000 each under Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 (Amended) .
More raids are expected in the coming days.
As per North East Now, the officials seized 216 kilograms of banned single-use plastic items from 16 shops in the northern parts of the city, including Mahatma Gandhi Avenue and Major Khul.
The shops were also fined a total of RS 12,000 for violating the ban and failing to produce valid documents for the items.
This raid comes shortly after the Manipur Government announced a complete and enforced ban on single-use plastic products, effective from April 15, 2025 .
