Road repairing ahead of Sangai Festival

Imphal, October 14, 2013: The State Government is planning to revamp the roads around Palace Compound ahead of the Sangai Festival.

Talking to The Sangai Express, Works Minister Kh Ratankumar said that process for construction of Sanjenthong would start once designing of the bridge is completed.

The Minister said that reason for developing cracks on the roads of Palace compound is due to faulty drainage system.

The level of the drains located at the northern side of Palace compound is quite high, so excess water often flows over the road that lead to frequent developing of cracks on roads, he added.

However, for the convenience of the tourists coming from other States and countries and people of Manipur, the road would be revamped ahead of the upcoming Sangai Festival, he added.

Regarding Sanjenthong bridge, the Minister said that the State Government has engaged Project Consultant India Private Ltd, New Delhi to develop a new and suitable design of the bridge.

Saying that process for the start of construction of the bridge would be initiated once the design is with the State Government, the Minister said that PWD Engineers are closely monitoring the condition of the bridge.

M/s BS Bikram is currently undertaking construction of roads starting from Andro parking to Govindaji road to Mahabali road and western side of City Convention Centre.

As important functions are generally organised around AIR Imphal, Govindaji temple, Royal Palace, BOAT, Iboyaima Shanglen, MFDC and City Convention Centre, roads around Palace Compound have to be developed in consultation with the Chief Minister, Ratankumar said.

Repairing of Yairipok, Dingko, Minuthong to Lamlong, Thangmeiband Watham Leirak, IT, Andro parking and Konung Mamang roads are in progress with funds from Special Plan Assistance and 13th Finance Commission, the Minister said and added that roads leading to RIMS, Shija Hospital Langol, Naoremthong, Sagolband to Tera and Singjamei roads have already been repaired.

The Minister added that PWD is undertaking many projects in co-ordination with PDA and PHED as well.

Dr Ratankumar further said that repairing of roads around Imphal city would be completed before the completion of this financial year.

He added that Rs One crore each for 40 valley Assembly Constituencies and Rs 1.50 crore for 20 hill Constituencies have been earmarked under Special Plan Assistance for the construction of roads.

Moreover, Rs 10 lakh each for all the 60 ACs is earmarked under 13th Finance Commission for the same purpose, he added.

The State PWD would construct the roads which are recommended by the MLAs concerned, he added.
