Concerted efforts taken up for drinking water supply

Imphal, May 11 2016: The Government of Manipur has taken up adequate steps for quenching the need of people's potable water through Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Manipur.

The Department is dealing with the maintenance of both Urban and Rural Water Supply Schemes and sanitation in the State.

To meet the need of the people, various ,schemes had also been taken up by the PHED.

The Department has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) - "Integrated Water Supply Project for Imphal Planning area" with an estimated cost of Rs 180.61 crore to improve and sustain water supply infrastructure for another 30 years designed period in phase manner.

Phase-I of the project amounting to Rs 98.54 crore under the then transition phase of JNNURM was sanctioned during February 2014 and works are in progress.

This phase includes the renovation of Water Treatment Plants (WTP) at Koirengei, Khuman Lampak, Singda, Kangchup extension, Chinga, Porompat, Minuthong, Canchipur and construction of 6 intake, 9 WTPs, 5 clear water reservoirs, 3 service reservoirs, 3 pumping stations, 1 overhead tank and emergency reservoir.

Phase-II of the project amounting to Rs 200 crore is proposed to be funded under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and phase-III amounting to Rs 1531.82 crore is proposed to be funded under JICA loan.

Under the Imphal Water Supply Scheme, 216.04 km of DI pipes of various sizes has been laid and 7 WTPs of 44.93 MLD have been constructed and commissioned at Irilbung, Old Thumbuthong, Canchipur-II, Potsangbam-II, Moirangkhom, Waithoupat, Singjamei ward No 17.Five reservoirs of 2.5 ML capacity in total have been constructed at Babupara, Rahamania, Khongman and Koirengei.

Five overhead tanks of 0.45 ML capacity each have been constructed at Assembly Secretariat, Keishampat, Babupara, Nepra Menjor and Thiyam leikai.

The financial expenditure incurred during 2002-16 is Rs 247.29 crore.

The Imphal City Sewerage Project (phase-I) covering Imphal Municipal ward no 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 14, 15, 24, 25 and 26 is taken up under EAP with French assistance.

Construction of Sewerage Treatment Plant and five pumping stations has been completed.

Primary sewer network of length of 22.231 km has been laid completely and out of 44.138 km secondary sewer network, length of 29.138 km has been laid.

92 per cent of the work has been completed.

The cost of the project is Rs 323.78 crore and the expenditure upto February 2016 is Rs 301.65 crore.

Under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR), 47 water supply schemes have been taken up and completed at various places in the hill districts.

Works are also taken up under the NEC schemes.

During 2002-16, under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP), 1374 habitations have been benefited and the expenditure incurred during this period is Rs 24176.03.Under this scheme, it is expected to provide drinking water supply to all in the State by 2022 .

Under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), a number of works have been implemented and the expenditure incurred during 2002-16 is Rs 111.67 crore.

Under this scheme, 4, 31,378 rural individual households are to be provided sanitary latrines by October 2, 2019 .
