Imphal, October 10 2026:
The Socialist Revolutionary Party (SOREPA) has called a total shutdown from 5 am to 5 pm on October 15 .
A statement issued by SOREPA Publicity and Organization Secretary MC Yaifabi said that it was on October 15, 1949 that Indian annexed Manipur after king Bodhchandra was forced to sign the Manipur Merger Agreement under house arrest and duress at Shillong on September 21, 1949 .
It said that the total shutdown will not cover media, medical services and religious functions.
SOREPA said that many erstwhile colonial powers had given up colonialism in the face of strong and sustained liberation movements in different parts of the world.
However, India which was once a British colony, embarked on a journey of imperialism soon after its independence, occupying smaller Nations and fomenting communal violence, it alleged.
It said that the people of Kangleipak should never forget the fact that they are still subjects of a colonial power, devoid of any freedom.
It is essential to remember October 15, 1949, the day independent Manipur was brought under Indian occupation and protest repeatedly, wage resistance movement and express objection to the annexation before the whole world, SOREPA said.
Otherwise future generations may assume that India is their country, they are Indians and they must obey New Delhi's instructions, it said.
SOREPA said that the annexation of Manipur was executed in blatant violation of the international law as well as the Manipur Constitution Act 1947 .
In chapter VII "The Gens among the Celts and Germans" of Friedrich Engels' book "The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, Kangleipak/Manipur is mentioned as Munniporees, a group of people among three communities he studied in his work.
Eminent sociologists and social anthropologists of the 18th century and 19th century referred to Kangleipak/Manipur as Munnipore/Manipur and her people as Munniporees.
This reference was not found in the first edition of the book published in 1884. But the particular reference can be found in the 4th revised edition published in 1891 .
The fact that Manipur is mentioned in the work of such eminent philosophers like Friedrich Engels testified that Kangleipak/Manipur existed as an independent Nation, SOREPA said.
The trajectory of a colonised or occupied Nation can be seen in the following sequence; first, political subjugation, second, creating a situation of economic and third, creating a system of social classification, it said.
The outfit remarked that the people of Kangleipak are still unable to clearly define the meeting point between reformism and revolutionary movement.
"We still find it difficult to separate anarchism from social democratic movement.
We are still struggling to bring the social democratic movement to the path of the movement for right to self-determination", it said.
It appears that most people believe more in electoral reformation than the movement for right to self-determination, the outfit remarked.
In today's 'smart age', there is a growing need to build a 'smart generation',it said.
It's time for the new generation who have fair knowledge of the changing world to lead the liberation movement, SOREPA added.
