Manjit calls on NE youths to unite for protecting identity and land of the region

Imphal, March 09 2019: AMSU team led by its President participated in the 46th Annual General conference of Karbi Students' Association at Chokiwola, East Karbi anglong, Assam.

The programme is going on for three days, i.e., from 7 to 9 March,2019 .

Speaking as the Guest of Honour at the Students Open Session, Manjit Sarangthem , President of AMSU stressed on the issue of land and identity which is facing serious challenges especially in the context of Manipur.

, "My state in the ancient past was an independent Asiatic state which welcomed all comers to our land, the people of Manipur was constituted by not only the indigenous Meiteis and other tribal ethnic communities", Manjit said and added that the Asiatic kingdom even welcome Indian Brahmins who had escaped the onslaught of Muslims in India and also welcomed Islamic population since 15th & 16th centuries.

"We welcomed Indians, Assamese, Bengalis, Chins, Burmese and Chinese and they were integrated in our social structure" Manjit added.

Coming to the present day context Manjit said that under new historical forces of colonial expansion, conquest of our land by aliens and outsiders.

"We had become no longer masters of our land, people who did not speak our language, people who did not eat our food, and people who were stranger to us had become master of our territories.

They had become rulers and lawmakers and we had to survive to maintain our identity and culture in a regime where we are no longer master, the AMSU president said.

This phenomenon has become extremely powerful since fifties when India became independent, Refugees & illegal migrants had created a new history.

Manjit also cited the condition of Tripura today, and also that of Arunachal Pradesh.

Manjit also highlighted the crisis arising at Assam due to the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which he term as very potent and dangerous phenomenon which will challenge the very reason of our being the sons of the soil.

""How shall we preserve our lands, our precious cultures which are under threat? " Manjit asked and said that the young Generation of North East Indian must collectively sit down together to discuss these very critical issues of contemporary times.

Electoral politics of mainstream India should be understand by the youths on who are our friends or our enemies, Manjit added.

Other prominent organizations from all across the North East including Hmar Students Association, All Dimasa Students Union, Kuki Students' Organisation Karbi anglong, Moran Students' Union, Rengmai Naga Students' Union, Manipuri Youth Front Assam also participated the programme.

The session was presided by Bijoy Bey, President of Karbi Students' Association and Longsin Teron, Bharat Gaurav Awardee and President of Journalist Association For Assam (JAFA) as the Chief Guest.
