Six URF cadres held with arms and ammos

Imphal, March 06 2012: Altogether six cadres of the United Revolutionary Front (URF) including its home secretary who were reportedly involved in bomb attacks against candidates in the run up to the recent Assembly elections have been apprehended by security forces along with arms and incriminating documents.

It has also been learnt from their disclosure that URF has been planning to target non-local people during the Yaoshang festival in collaboration with the CorCom.

Speaking to media persons this evening, Imphal East Commando OC Inspector S Chandrakumar said that a combined team of Imphal East commandos, troops of 30 AR and 28 AR, acting on a specific tip off, conducted search operation at Khurai Chingangbam Leikai.

The URF home secretary was apprehended in the course of the operation.

The URF home secretary identified as Puyam Mongyamba alias Biren alias Ruhini alias Sushil alias Khura (47) of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai was apprehended from a paddy field known as Thenga Loubuk near his home at about 8.45 am.

Further, the home secretary's wife Memton alias Ing (47) was also pulled up by the combined force.

Two Chinese hand grenades, one .32 pistol, two magazines, two live rounds, 80 extortion notes of URF and a personal computer set were recovered from the possession of Memton.

Acting on the disclosure of the couple, four other cadres of URF were also pulled up, said OC Chandrakumar.

The four other cadres have been identified as Ningombam Amarchand alias Boy (31) of Moirangkampu Makha Leikai, Ngangkham Ranjan alias Ibungo (22) of Khurai Konsam Leikai, Ngangkham Rocky alias Bungcha (21) of Khurai Laishram Leikai and Ngangkham Khagemba alias Laba (21) of the same locality.

One 9 mm pistol containing two live rounds, 100 extortion notes of URF, two Chinese hand grenades with detonators and a mobile handset were recovered from the possession of Ranjan.

They revealed that URF was behind the grenade/bomb attacks at the residences of Congress candidate in Singjamei AC I Hemochandra, AITC candidate in Khurai AC Leishangthem Yaima and BJP candidate in Kshetrigao AC Th Ibosana.

They further disclosed that URF has been planning to attack non-local people during the Yaoshang festival in collaboration with CorCom, said Inspector Chandrakumar.

URF was set up on January 7 this year and its president Mangangthoi is currently staying in Bangladesh.

Its vice-president is one Jashwa Mangang alias Raghumani alias Oja Mangang from Bishnupur who was once Editor of a monthly journal.

He too is holed up in Bangladesh.

AK Pibarel of Sagolband Tera is the outfit's information and publicity secretary, Lemba Meitei from Nongren is the finance secretary and Kiyamba from Yurenjam is the defence secretary, said the OC as disclosed by the arrested cadres.
