Imphal, June 04 2024:
With the Congress sealing a resounding victory in the two Lok Sabha seats in Manipur, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra has claimed that the winning margin ofboth its candidates could have been much higher had the ruling party not indulged in gun violence and used money and muscle power.
More specifically, the MPCC chief said that the party's candidate in Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency (IMPC) Dr Bimol Akoijam could have won the election by a whooping margin of over six lakh votes had the election been held in a free and fair manner.
Dr Bimol won the Inner seat while Alfred K Arthur who also fought the Lok Sabha election on Congress ticket won the Outer seat.
Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan on winning both the Inner and Outer PC today, Meghachandra continued that the people of Manipur have shown its support to the INDIA Bloc by voting in favour of the alliance.
Claiming that the BJP Government tried to win the election by using force through booth capturing, destruction of EVMs and intimidation of voters, the Congress leader added that the winning margin of the Congress party could have been much higher had the ruling party didn't employ money and muscle power at the time of election.
People have taught a befitting lesson to the BJP Government, he said.
Saying that the Lok Sabha election in Manipur wasn't free and fair, Meghachandra maintained that many BJP workers also voted in favour of the Congress as they were fed up of the saffron party's conduct.
The failure of the BJP Government to control the ethnic violence in Manipur was also a major factor behind people losing faith in the saffron party, the Congress leader said.
Saying that Congress candidate Alfred K Arthur also won the Outer seat, Meghachadra thanked the people for giving their mandate to the grand old party.
Further stating that Rahul Gandhi visited during the peak of violence in Manipur and reached out to both the warring parties, Meghachandra added that many leaders of INDIA Bloc also came to Manipur to work out a solution.
He said that the Congress party will work extra hard to deliver all the assurances given in its manifesto.
