Imphal, January 03 2015 : The 13th foundation day of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) was held today at Manipur University Centenary Hall on the theme 'Refraining politics from Government's role in education' .

Manipur Pollution Control Board Chairman Dr Ng Bijoy, Deputy Speaker MK Preshow Shimray, MU Dean of Students Welfare Prof RK Hemkumar, AZSU president Pamei Tingenlung, KSO president Pautinthang Lupheng and DESAM president Moirangthem Angamba attended the foundation day as presidium members.

As part of the foundation day celebration, a blood donation camp was also organised where more than 500 students donated blood.

Giving the key-note address, Moirangthem Angamba underscored the importance of education for development of a society.

Undue political interference in education is a tragedy for the whole student community.

Manipur with limited resources can compete with other States of India only when its human resources are alleviated to a higher plane.

To achieve a higher level of human resource development, quality education should be taken to the grassroot level instead of reserving privilege only for higher education.

The Government need to overhaul the existing education system under a long term policy, Angamba said.

Dr Ng Bijoy said that the alleged political interference in education was invited by the failure of relevant officers to discharge their duties responsibly.

Politics is not an exclusive subject or domain of politicians.

While lauding all the student organisations which have been working for the student community, Dr Bijoy opined that intrusion by students into other activities beyond the domain of education and learning would not be productive.

Dr Bijoy also read out the Chief Minister's speech.

Pamei Tingenlung said that Manipur can embark on the path of progress and development only when there is unity among the different communities.

If one is guided by the parochial outlook of ethno-exclusivity, the inter-community relationships would become more and more strained.

Until and unless there is mutual respect between different communities, peace and stability would remain elusive.

KSO president Pautinthang Lupheng said that all the problems besetting Manipur can be addressed when the State's human resources are developed to the desired level.

Deputy Speaker Preshow Shimray stated that the Government has formulated many policies and programmes for the improvement of the existing education system and all these policies and programmes would be fully implemented within a short period.

On the occasion of the 13th foundation day of DESAM, the Chingu Maichou Khongnang Thaba Award was conferred to four dedicated teachers.

The teachers who were honoured with the award were Headmaster Thounaojam Manglemba of Wangoi Jr H/S, CC Hr Sec School Principal Sinam Indrani, Assistant Headmaster Huidrom Nabakumar of Meitei Mayek High School and Lecturer Lourembam Nabakumar of Lilong Higher Secondary Madrassa.
