Imphal, June 01 2024:
Even as floodwater has receded in most areas, there is no sign of relief at many places including Thangal Keithel and Paona Keithel.
Many areas at these markets are still water-logged and piles of garbage have been found accumulated at at many areas of Thangal Keithel and Paona Keithel even though they are no longer inundated.
Some places which are still inundated include Raj Bhavan compound, MG Avenue, Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, PWD complex, complexes of engineering departments, official residence of the Justice of Manipur High Court and Dhanamanjuri College complex, Laipham Khunou, Leirikyengbam Leikai and Nagaram, among others.
It may be mentioned that the flooding at Thangal Keithel and Paona Keithel began from late night on Wednesday (May 29) and access to the two keithels became extremely difficult from the early morning of the next day (May 30) with the floodwater reaching upto Keishampat Nityaipat Chuthek.

It is feared that properties worth lakhs of rupees, if not crores, may have been damaged at the two keithels (Thangal and Paona) alone because of the flood.
Shop owners were seen coming to their respective shops and checking their stuff after the flood water was drained out from Paona Keithel and Thangal Keithel.
People were seen struggling while walking along different roads/lanes in the Keithel areas as the roads have become extremely muddy.
A large quantity of foodgrains and other edibles were found soaked and damaged inside different stores at Thangal Keithel.
People were also seen draining out water from the low lying areas of the two keithels using water pumps and clearing solid waste and damaged items.
This reporter also saw solid waste and damaged items from shops piling up at different places.
While talking to this reporter, those staying at the Keithel areas appealed to the authority concerned to remove the trash as it poses health risks to them.
Notably, the road stretch along Nambul River bank on the western side of Paona Keithel was closed down temporarily by placing hard objects as a portion of the retaining wall along the river bank was damaged yesterday.
Meanwhile, the water which seeped out and overflowed from the Khabi River, Mayai Loukhong River and Nambol River have started accumulating at Nambol Phoijing, Laitonjam, and Khathong, among others and the same has made the people living at these areas and Ishok vulnerable.
