Imphal, February 01 2026: Confirming a split within the National People's Party (NPP), former State unit president Yumnam Joykumar has launched "NPP Tera Lai", a new party under his leadership.

This development came months after the NPP leader was sidelined and former MP Dr Lorho S Pfoze was appointed the NPP State unit president along with several other persons in key positions within the party in November last year.

Y Joykumar had then voiced his dissatisfaction over the appointments.

The former NPP president had accused the NPP leadership of removing him from the position for raising "core issues" concerning Manipur crisis and the interest of the Meitei community.

Launching the new party, Joykumar hoisted its flag at the office premises of Mayol Energy Pvt Ltd at Iroishemba today.

He then took the chair as president of the party at the former office of the NPP at Naoremthong.

Several former MLAs who had won and contested elections on NPP tickets attended the launch event.

Y Joykumar said the NPP-TL will field more than 25 candidates in the 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.

He said the party will win big in the elections, and play key roles in the formation of Government.

Joykumar said the rift within the NPP emerged due to lack of proper understanding and attention to the issues facing Manipur.

He said Conrad K Sangma-led NPP failed to pay attention to the issues facing Manipur.

The decision to form NPP-TL was taken during a meeting on December 4, 2025.Former leaders and members of the NPP took part in the meeting, and a unanimous decision was taken to float the new party, Joykumar said.

An application for registering the NPP-TL as a political party with the Election Commission was submitted on December 26, 2025 .

The Election Commission intimated the receipt of application on January 6, 2026, he said.

The process to recognise NPP-TL as a political party is underway.

The office of the party was opened and the flag was hoisted as parts of the process to get recognition, Joykumar said.

Joykumar claimed people are increasingly placing their faith in the NPP Tera Lai.

After getting the required registration, the party members will work with dedica- tion to further strengthen the party, he said.

The aim and objective of the NPP-TL is to work according to the will of the people and address the issues facing Manipur, Joykumar said.

He claimed there are many people who have shown interest in joining the NPP Tera Lai.

Considering the massive positive response it is receiving, Joykumar said, NPP Tera Lai is expected to win at least 25-26 seats in the coming general elections.

He said the party will focus on merits of aspiring candidates when giving party tickets.

The NPP-TL has been launched with the objective to save Manipur and its indigenous people, he said.

While the party will work for development and prosperity of the State and its people, special focus will be given on the issues facing Manipur and resolving the current crisis, he said.

The NPP Tera Lai stands for lasting peace, and will work toward building trust between indigenous communities, and unity, he added.

To resolve the current crisis, people of all communities must work together to build trust and foster peaceful coexistence, he said.All the communities including the Meitei, Naga, Kuki, Meitei Pangal and others must put in joint efforts to bring about unity, and face any threats to the integrity of the State collectively, Joykumar said.

The Meitei community must continue to lead in building trust and unity among the communities, he added.
