Imphal, August 28 2026: The 1st Manipur Independence Record Day was observed today at Rupmahal Theatre, Imphal, organised by Custom and Traditional Observation Committee (Culture Defence Council)-COTAC.

The observance was held to pay tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives to protect sovereignty.

Speaking on the topic "Manipur Independence Record Day 28 August is the Gift of Integrity Among Different Tribes in Manipur", COTAC chief advisor Mangisana said records prove that Manipur existed as a sovereign country and was not under British rule but was kept as a protectorate.

He said Manipur became a part of India under a 9-point agreement from being an independent Nation, and it is important not only to preserve existing historical records but also to make others aware of them.

Mangisana said the land inherited from forefathers, which once covered about 2.5 lakh sq km including parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Tibet, Lushai Hills and Garo Hills, is now reduced to only 22,327 sq km, with the fertile Kabow Valley measuring 22,220 sq km handed over, and it is time to introspect whether this is justice.

The function was attended by COTAC president Y Indrani Devi, Universal Mothers Organisation president Moirangthem Momon Leima, Lilong Municipal Council Councillor Advocate Ajmal Nisa and retired Executive Engineer Leitanthem Gulapi as presidium members.
