R-Day celebrated amid tight security
CM appeals to all for building the State with a firm stand

As in other parts of the country, the 64th Republic Day of India was also celebrated by the Government of Manipur amid security in view of the boycott call given by various UG groups and the serial bomb blasts that rocked Imphal on the eve of the celebration.
At 1st Manipur Rifles complex where the main function was held Governor Gurvachan Jagat unfurling the tri-colour flag and took the salute of 115 different march-past contingents yesterday.
In view of the boycott call and the bomb threats, the number of the public coming out to witness the celebration was comparative lower than in previous years and the very few seats could be seen being occupied in the pavilion arranged for the public.
Apart from that, unlike in previous celebrations, none of the March past contingents and the tableaux vehicles were allowed to enter the campus of 1st Manipur Rifles.
The tableaux vehicles were made to park in front of Imphal Secretariat and all the contingents were made to assemble at the helipad inside Kangla.
The time given to the cultural troupes was also very short.
Before he took the salute of the March Past contingents, the Governor witnessed the Guard of Honour given by a contingent of Manipur police, which was commanded by Lungshei kipgen, Commandant of 4th IRB.
The Governor also presented Police Medal to outstanding Police personnel on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, who presided over the celebration, said that we should understand the duties of the citizens of a democratic country like India.
The Chief Minister observed that country has been fast developing in all fields ever since India attained independence, and it has been able to take part in the globalization process.
The State of Manipur has also developed considerably in the field of education, transportation, sports, arts and culture, science and technology etc.
However, the State still lags behind in economy and industrial development.
The State has also not been able to fully develop the hill areas in a faster manner, he added.
Nonetheless, the Chief Minister observed that Manipur would have lots of future prospects for development, provided the people of the State live peacefully, help each other and come together as one.
He appealed to the people of the State to help in building the State with a firm stand.
In continuation of the celebration, Beating the Retreat, the final part of Republic day celebration was held at the parade Ground of 1st Manipur Rifles here today.
The function was marked by showcasing of traditional songs and dances by different cultural troupes and presentation of prizes to the toppers of the March Past competition.
In the NCC category, Sainik School bagged the first prize; NCC Senior Wing and Sainik School (B) bagged the second prize jointly while the third prize was won by NCC, 14 Battalion Senior Boys.
DM College of Science (Boys) and DM College Science (Girls) bagged the first and second prize of the march-past competition among the College contingents while the third prize was jointly received by DM College of Science (Girls) and Imphal College.
In the School contingent category, Anand Singh Higher Secondary, National Sports Academy (Girls) and TG Higher Secondary School (A) bagged first, second and third prize respectively.
The Manipur Rifles Band Platoon; Assam Regiment Band (Territorial Army) and Sainik School Band took away the first, the second and the third prizes in the Band Platoon category.
In the Cultural Troupe category, the Cultural Troupe from Ukhrul district; the Bishnupur Dsitrict Chingu Thangjing and the Kom Cultural Dance grabbed the first, the second and the third prizes respectively.
In the Tableaux display category, IFCD got the first prize; RD & PR got the second prize while the MGNREGS got the third prize.
The Forest Department, Education Department (RMSA) and the Education Department (SSA) got the first, the second and the third prize respectively in the Gate making category.
