As part of the 71st Wildlife Week Celebration 2025, a painting and essay competition was successfully organised at the Manipur Forest Training Institute, Luwangsangbam on the theme "Living with Wildlife", under the aegis of the Central Forest Division.
As per a release issued by Central Forest Division, the event was graced by dignitaries, including Vikram Suresh Nadhe, Divisional Forest Officer, Central Forest Division; Dr Rebika Soibam Chanu, Director, Forest Training Institute; Tipu Raj Toijam, Range Forest Officer (Headquarters); Kiranjit Yumnam, RFO, Sadar West Range; Sorokhaibam Robatson Singh, RFO, Nongmaiching Range; Mangsatabam Jobid Meitei, RFO, Sadar East Range; David Athokpam, RFO, Sawombung Range; and Hijam Martin Luwang, RFO, Manipur Forest Training Institute.
Alongside the forest officials, staff members and supporting personnel from various divisions played an instrumental role in facilitating the smooth organization of the event.
In his keynote address, Vikram Suresh Nadhe emphasized Manipur's ecological significance as part of the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot, which is globally recognized for its rich and unique flora and fauna.
He stressed the urgent need to conserve this natural heritage in light of increasing human encroachment, habitat destruction, and climate change.
He drew particular attention to the Sangai, Manipur's iconic State Animal, which is critically endangered and endemic to the floating biomass of Keibul Lamjao National Park.
"The Sangai is not just a species, but a symbol of our identity and our responsibility", he remarked.
Highlighting the role of students as future custodians of the environment, he noted, "Engaging young minds through creative platforms like painting and essay competitions helps inculcate a sense of appreciation for nature and a deeper understanding of the delicate balance between humans and wildlife".
Nadhe also proudly recalled the accomplishment of Soram Jairaj, a student of Nongpok Maheikol, Bamon Leikai, Imphal East, who won 2nd position in the National Level Painting Competition in 2024, bringing prestige and recognition to the state on a national platform.
The celebration saw an overwhelming response, with more than 500 students participating from over 20 schools spread across Imphal West and Imphal East districts.
The young participants expressed their thoughts and creativity through vibrant paintings and thoughtful essays, advocating for harmony between humans and wildlife - a pressing concern in today's world.
Prizes and certificates were awarded to top performers in various categories, encouraging and recognizing their efforts.
