Imphal, April 25 2026:
The ongoing mass hunger strike at Malom, demanding justice for the victims of the Tronglaobi incident, faced a crackdown today as Manipur Police detained a prominent female protester.
However, the movement remains undeterred, with a new volunteer immediately stepping in to take her place.
Konsam Nganthoi of UNAL was picked up from Ibudhou Pakhangba Sanglen, Malom Awang Leikai, around 1 pm and taken to RIMS for medical attention.
She had been fasting as part of the protest seeking justice for the April 7 Tronglaobi killings.
Minutes later, Malom Awang Leikai resident Tokpam Gita began a fresh hunger strike at the site.
The police action came as the protest entered its 19th day and a new platform, "Langdai Khangsunaha", was launched to intensify the agitation.
The platform unites Meira Paibi units from Malom Awang, Malom Mayai, Malom Makha and Meitram Awang with the People's Alliance for Peace and Progress, Manipur (PAPPM).
Khoisnam Tara Devi is convenor.
Soibam Elizabeth Devi, Kshetrimayum Premi Devi, Khumanthem Tababi Devi, Kayenpaibam Anita Devi and Laishram Lata Devi are co-convenors.
Speaking to the media, Kayenpaibam Anita said the platform aims to unify clubs and Meira Paibi groups from Malom to Meitram.
"This will streamline the hunger strike and ensure a coordinated push for justice", she said.
Langdai Khangsunaha issued a 9-point memorandum demanding: enquiry into the killings with action in a set timeframe; Tronglaobi killings declared acts of terrorism with punishment for perpetrators; Security deployment in vulnerable frontier villages; Eviction of encroachments from reserve forests, wildlife sanctuaries and wetlands based on satellite mapping; Crackdown on poppy farming and prosecution of backers; Manipur-specific NRC with 1951/1961 as the base year; Official recognition that violence since May 2023 is organised terrorism, not "ethnic clashes"; Return of IDPs to original homes with safety guarantees.
