Awareness prog on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao held

Thoubal, December 24 2018: District Programme Office, Thoubal and Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), Thoubal jointly organized an awareness and education programme for Anganwadi workers, helpers, ASHA workers, supervisors of ICDS, members of Club etc regarding 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' at Lilong Hangamthabi Community Hall today.

The programme was attended by Sub Divisional Officer (SDO), Lilong, Kh Gobardhon as chief guest; District Programme Officer, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), Thoubal, N Shyama Devi as functional president; and District Youth Coordinator, NYK Thoubal, Yumnam Laksman Singh as guest of honour.

In her speech as functional president, N Shyama said that the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme was initiated by the Govt of India in 2015 for the prevention of gender biased sex selective elimination, ensuring survival & protection of the girl child, ensuring education and participation of the girl child in this country and added that it aims to address the issue of the declining child sex ratio as per the 2011 Census data in among the age group of 0-6 years.

Sex selection procedure before birth is illegal, she added and said that gender biased sex selective elimination is the root cause of declining sex ratio of girl child.

It is very unfortunate that the parents still prefer boys over girls while providing education, she lamented and urged the parents to treat girl child equally at par with boys so that they can become an independent, hard-working and dynamic individuals in future.

She further appealed all to take advantage of the various beneficial scheme initiated for girl child by the Govt to bring a peaceful and civilized society.
