Eight UGs lay down arms before DGP, IGAR(S)

Eight UGs, including two privates of the UNLF and a second lieutenant of the KCP(MTF), laid their arms before the DGP, Y Joykumar and Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) in a formal surrender ceremony held today at IGAR(S) complex, Mantripukhri.
Four of the eight UGs, two UNLF, one each of PREPAK and KCP (MTF) were surrendered through the 8 Assam Rifles while the other four UGs, two from UPPK (United People's Party of Kangleipak) and one each from KCP(MTF) and KCP (Lamyanba Khuman) surrendered through the 29 Assam Rifles.
The two UNLF cadres are Gopal Sharma @ Laimkaiba (25) son of Mangi of Kwakeithel Thokchom Leikai, Imphal and Hemanta @ Manimatum (20) son of Maimu of Keirao, Imphal east.
They are said to be working as privates of the outfits.
Gopal surrendered with a 7.65 mm pistol with a magazine while Hemanta with a 9 mm pistol with magazine containing five live rounds.
The PREPAK cadre, sergeant Jelen Khangebam @ Boni (25) son of Pungo Yaima of Kumbi Awang Leikai, surrendered with a 9 mm pistol with magazine containing nine live rounds while the KCP(MTF) cadre, Kabi Kanta @ Thoiba of Wangkhem of Thoubal district surrendered with six lethode bombs, one hand grenade, five detonators, 65 AK ammunitions ad one Kenwood set.
The UPPK cadres are Amom Rajesh @ Raju Singh (18) son of Pishak of Wangoo Tera and L Thoi @ Tomba Singh (18) son of Laishram Ranjit of Wangoo Chairen.
Rajesh laid down one 9 mm pistol before the DGP and IGAR(S) while Thoi surrendered with one 9mm pistol with a magazine containing five live rounds.
Among the two KCP(MTF) cadres, Angom Naocha Meitei (20) son of Pocha of Moirang Khoirou Leikai was the second lieutenant (finance secretary) of the group.
He surrendered with one 9 mm pistol with a magazine loaded with five live rounds.
The KCP (Lamyanba Khuman) cadre, Konjengbam Manovanjan Singh @ Sanjit (22) son of K Basanta Singh of Moirang in Bishnupur district surrendered with one 9 mm pistol along with a magazine of two live rounds.
Speaking on the occasion, DGP Y Joykumar said that Manipur has changed a lot in the last 5 to 10 years in terms of the number of misinformed youths shunning the path of violence and joining mainstream society to usher in peace and prosperity in the state.
He suggested that the public has begun to repose faith on security forces and police who have unturned succeeded in neutralizing dangerous elements in the society.
Today, various underground outfits operating in the state have lost their ideology and have veered towards extortion and such activities to sustain themselves, he said, adding that the climate of violence has been brought down drastically by the security forces and the police that people are now venturing out without the fear of any unforeseen happenings.
Major General CA Krishnan reiterated the commitment of Assam Rifles for ushering in an era of peace and prosperity in Manipur.
The surrendered UGs were involved in several insurgent activities against the security forces in the entire region.
They finally surrendered willingly to DGP Y Joykumar and Major General C A Krishnan, IGAR (South), claimed a statement of the PRO, IGAR(S).
The simple surrender ceremony was held at HQ IGAR (South), Mantripukhri at 11 am today.
The parents, relatives and wives of the surrendered terrorists were also present on the occasion.
Few village chiefs and prominent citizens were also present to encourage the youth.
The surrender of these UGs through Assam Rifles reinforces the faith of locals in the security forces, the statement said.
