Media's role in bridging gap between Government and citizens for society's progress underscored

Tamenglong, September 22 2026: The Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India, Imphal, organised a one-day media workshop (Varta) for media persons from Noney and Tamenglong districts on the theme "Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission (PMJVM)" at the Tamenglong District Headquarters today.

The Varta is part of PIB Imphal's outreach initiative to establish direct contact with media persons at the grassroots level.

The initiative aims to create an interface between the PIB and media organisations functioning in the two districts.

The event also sought to facilitate a meaningful dialogue between media persons and subject experts on the theme.

The workshop provided a platform to enhance awareness of various government policies, programmes and initiatives.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Engam Pame, Additional Director General, PIB, Regional Office, Imphal underscored the crucial role of the media in bridging the gap between the Government and citizens and in taking society forward in a positive direction.

Highlighting the important role of the media in disseminating information about government initiatives for citizens' welfare, he said that PIB Imphal attaches great importance to such workshops, as they provide an opportunity to ensure that information about government schemes reaches targeted beneficiaries through credible media platforms.

Expressing hope that the workshop would provide journalists with a comprehensive understanding of the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission, Dr Pame encouraged participants to seek clarification on any aspect of the scheme.

Urging media professionals to discharge their responsibilities with seriousness and commitment for the betterment of the future, Dr Pame stated that media persons are storytellers in their own right and described the media as the "fourth pillar" of the nation.

Namsurei Thomas Kamei, Assistant Professor and IQAC Coordinator, Tamenglong College, who was one of the resource persons, briefed the participants in detail about the scheme.

He spoke about empowering tribal communities through livelihoods, entrepreneurship and value addition.

He mentioned that the scheme is under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.

According to the resource person, the focus areas of the scheme include tribal livelihoods, entrepreneurship, value addition and market access, while the target groups are Scheduled Tribes and tribal communities.

Dr Lungthuiyang Riamei, Principal of United Builders School, in his closing remarks, emphasised the important role of the press and the significance of freedom of speech in a democratic society.

Ramkung Pamei, Editor of The Cham, in his keynote address, briefly highlighted the various schemes and initiatives discussed during the event.

He encouraged fellow journalists to play an active role in creating awareness among the public and informing common people about PMJVM and its benefits.

Ringbam Kamei, Editor of The Gaanphiu Mail and Correspondent, All India Radio (AIR), Imphal, appreciated the PIB for organising the event, particularly during these difficult times in Tamenglong District.

The programme concluded with an interaction with one of the beneficiaries, I D Kaipisinang.

During the interaction, journalists heard about his experience, success story and the challenges he encountered while benefiting from the scheme.
