All-party welcomes Centre move to halt border fencing

Imphal, December 20, 2013: While welcoming the Central Government's move to halt Indo-Myanmar border fencing in Chandel district, the political leaders, who were part of the all-party delegation that met the Prime Minister and Home Minister in New Delhi recently on border issue, have appealed to those left out political parties not to tarnish their efforts and politicise the border issue.

It may be mentioned that the leaders of Manipur People's Party (MPP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) remained aloof from the all-party delegation, accusing the Congress Party of certain malpractices on the issue of Indo-Myanmar border fencing at Moreh.

Addressing media persons at the residence of MLA RK Anand, who is also the convenor of the Drafting Committee, today, the political leaders said that all political parties based in the State came together on the border issue in greater interests of the people by putting aside all differences.

The political leaders conducted a spot inspection at the border area and then went on to meet the Prime Minister and Home Minister in New Delhi to urge them to halt the border fencing and look into the border dispute between Manipur and Myanmar.

In the aftermath of the meeting, a team of Ministry of Home Affairs conducted spot inspection at Moreh and instructed the BRO officials to halt the border fencing on December 5.Now, the border fencing has been put on hold and this is indeed the first success of the all-party delegation, they said.

The leaders further maintained that the border issue is for the whole State.

It is not an issue to be politicized for the benefits of some political parties.

Those left out political parties should better understand the people's sentiment and work sincerely towards solving the issue rather putting oil to the fire, they averred.

MLA Dr I Ibohalbi said that the joint boundary survey would be held between the last week of December and first week of January.

The State Government has been urged to take part in the survey and rectify the faulty boundary pillars between Manipur and Myanmar.

Secretary of CPI Manipur State Dr M Nara said that there is no difference among the political parties on the border issue.

The political parties have been working in close coordination to sort out ways to solve the issue.

However, some political parties have decided to go in a different way for uncertain reasons.

Their decision should not become an impediment to resolving the border issue, he added.
