TRI Manipur hosts seminar on "AI for Tribal Development"

As part of the nationwide Janjatiya Garima Utsav, the Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Manipur, organiseda 1-Day Capacity Building Seminar on "Capitalizing Artificial Intelligence for Tribal Development and Efficient Governance" at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Tribal Affairs & Hills.

Conducted in hybrid mode, the seminar saw participation of over 150 officers and staff from the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, TRI, Autonomous District Councils, Manipur Tribal Development Corporation, and Ashram Schools.
Delivering the keynote address, Vivek Kumar Dewangan, Additional Chief Secretary, TA & Hills Department, said Artificial Intelligence should be viewed as an enabling tool to support governance and public administration rather than replace human manpower.
He noted that AI can significantly improve administrative efficiency, transparency, and decisionmaking by processing information rapidly from multiple sources.
Addressing the gathering through video conferencing, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, who holds the TA & Hills and RD & PR portfolios, highlighted the transformative potential of AI in improving service delivery and reducing developmental gaps in the hill areas of Manipur.
She stressed that responsible adoption of emerging technologies could enhance governance and public welfare.
Earlier, Rangnamei Rang Peter, Director, TA & H/TRI, Manipur, welcomed the participants and underlined the need to build institutional capacity for effective utilisation of AI in governance.
The technical sessions were conducted by resource persons from the State e-Mission Team (SeMT), Department of IT, Manipur - Deepa Ngangbam, Bitom Singh Khuraijam, and Md Hassan Ali- who shared insights on practical applications of AI for inclusive development and efficient governance.
The seminar concluded with a collective call for collaborative efforts to leverage AI for sustainable tribal development and people-centric governance in the State.
Janjatiya Garima Utsav is being celebrated across the country under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs from May 11 to June 7, 2026, to honour the dignity, heritage, and contributions of tribal communities while highlighting welfare initiatives for their holistic development.
